Now, we know this can't go on forever, but in one week we've seen Jesse start to roll from back to front, then front to back, go from holding his arms tensed to reaching out to grab toys (and faces), and get himself up on hands and knees, revving up to try crawling.
Evie is going through the same rapid changes even though she started out ahead of Jesse in some ways. In the past week, she has started using her fingers individually to touch things and pinching things between thumb and forefinger often, rather than just grasping with the whole hand. She was already turning over readily, but now she can push herself up onto all fours and inch forward. Both are figuring out new ways to express themselves, too, especially Jesse. You saw the razzing the other day; he has also added screeching, laughing, and a sound kind of like Ernie from Sesame Street laughing. Evie is the quiet and shy one, so it has been a real advance to get consistent eye contact and some smiles from her. Just in the past few days she's been experimenting with a few noises; we're looking forward to more soon. All of this communication comes with lots of new facial expressions, and, we are convinced, with actual changes in their appearance. Its like their faces are taking on more definition from day to day. This is all very fun, and very encouraging, to see.

When we left she was still not done napping. This is where the two hours a day visiting, and all the opportunity for developing perspective on parenting so we can go back and do a better job the next day, all rested and ready, really stops seeming so great. I would really rather have stayed around to check on Evie, take her temperature, and generally worry about whether she was feeling well, than to be whisked off in a car by our driver and interpreter to sit here and speculate with you all about why she seemed so tired. Here's me looking forward to having these babies under my own roof!

It is just amazing what happens with consistent attention. Obviously I only see photos and what stikes me is their facial expressions - they are so relaxed, content & happy.
ReplyDeleteIt breaks my heart to read about Evie. I am sorry that you can't take care of her all the time now. Soon . . . soon.
They are simply adorable. With parents like you two, those babies are going to be so smart! :)
ReplyDeleteHush, little baby, don't say a word.
ReplyDeletePapa's gonna buy you a mockingbird
And if that mockingbird won't sing,
Papa's gonna buy you a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring turns brass,
Papa's gonna buy you a looking glass
And if that looking glass gets broke,
Papa's gonna buy you a billy goat
And if that billy goat won't pull,
Papa's gonna buy you a cart and bull
And if that cart and bull turn over,
Papa's gonna buy you a dog named Rover
And if that dog named Rover won't bark
Papa's gonna buy you a horse and cart
And if that horse and cart fall down,
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town
Why do birds suddenly appear?
ReplyDeleteEverytime you are near
Just like me they long to be
Close to you
Why do stars fall down from the
sky, everytime you walk by
Just like me they long to be close
to you
On the day that you were born
The angels got together and decided
To create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moondust in your
hair and starlight in your eyes of
brown
That is why all the folks in town
Follow you all around just like me
They long to be close to you
Written by the Carpenter's when you guys were babies! I took the liberty of making a minor adjustment to the lyrics!
Down the road, if you ever have something you need or want to read for yourselves, ie newspaper, magazine, work material, they will not care what the words are if you want to just read it aloud, they just enjoy hearing the sound of your voice!
All looks warm and loving in the arms of Mommy and Daddy and fingers (maybe they're starting a tooth in there, would be about the right time!).
With life just begun, my sleeping new son
ReplyDeleteHas eyes that roll back in his head
They flutter and dart, he slows down his heart
And pictures a world past his bed
Its hard to believe
As I watch you breathe
Your mind drifts and weaves
When you dream,
What do you dream about?
When you dream,
What do you dream about?
Do you dream about
Music or mathematics
Or planets too far for the eye?
Do you dream about
Jesus or quantum mechanics
Or angels who sing lullabies?
His fontanelle pulses with lives that hes lived
With memories hell learn to ignore
And when it is closed, he already knows
Hes forgotten all he knew before
But when sleep sets in
History begins
But the future will win
When you dream,
What do you dream about?
When you dream,
What do you dream about?
Are they colour or black and white,
Yiddish or english
Or languages not yet conceived?
Are they silent or boisterous?
Do you hear noises just
Loud enough to be perceived?
Do you hear del shannons runaway playing
On transistor radio waves?
With so little experience,
Your mind not yet cognizant
Are you wise beyond your few days?
When you dream,
What do you dream about?
When you dream,
What do you dream about?
